There comes a time in your life when your not really learning a lot of new words. But this week I learned a new word - spredged! It's a combo of sprayed and edges. Although it hasn't yet made it into the dictionary it's been increasingly seen since 2024, with its first sightings in 2020. It refers to books with artwork and color on the edges of the pages.
In the beginning, spredged books were special editions. People who bought and read the "regular" edition would then buy the spredged edition if they were a superfan. But spredged books have become so popular that sometimes they are available immediately. When I received a review copy of Megan Michelle's Skylark it was spredged. I was beyond excited! Finally, I own a spredged book. Thank you, Megan.
It makes me wonder if there will come a time when all books will be spredged? Part of me loves that idea and another part fights against that. Because, like so many other things, when it becomes familiar and expected it loses that special quality. In time, we may even cease to notice the spredged details. But not today. In fact, I was visiting friends for the weekend and someone picked my book off the coffee table one morning and had all kinds of questions about the "wild" pages. And now another person has been introduced to the word spredged!
Here's a peek at the spredged part of Skylark. It's got a great teal and deep pink color scheme with images of guns and skylarks. This military action romance is on a WOW Blog Tour so stop by later this week for my review of the book. For now, you can read an author interview and enter to win a copy HERE.
