No Agent? No Problem!

Like most writers, one of my dreams is capturing the ever elusive species: Literary Agent. I've been pouring over lists of agents accepting submissions, refining my elevator speech and signing up for pitching events but in the meantime, a once in a lifetime - OK, once in a year - chance came to my attention. Tin House is open to debut novel submissions on January 11-12. No agents necessary! I feel like they lean more toward literary fiction but I did see some historical fiction and thrillers.

You only have to submit the first chapter but need to have a finished manuscript ready for submission. So if you're a debut novelist I say go for it! What do you have to lose? You can get more details HERE.

Also, if you're a poet or a short story writer add these dates to your calendar:

May 10-11 Debut Poetry Collections

September 13-14 Debut Short Story Collection

I am not a poet but let's think about it from a short story perspective which is more in my wheelhouse. There are 249 days or about 35 weeks until September 13. Short story collections are usually around 40,000 words but can vary widely. So maybe a dozen stories. If you write a story every two weeks you'll end up with 19 stories. Some you may already have written. Who out there thinks they could have a short story collection ready to submit by September? Come on, raise your hand!
