Thoughts About Rumination Remedies

Although I have periodic bouts of ruminating (or overthinking), I have several friends who can be paralyzed by the grip of this worrying habit. I have been shouting about this book to everyone I think could benefit from reading it. Honestly, I think in the fast-paced, anxiety-inducing world we live in, there are very few people who couldn't benefit from reading this book.

But first, let me clear something up. This is a book that leads you on a journey. In addition to explanations about the roots of overthinking and how it can affect us, this book is mainly about activities to help yourself change your life by discouraging overthinking. This isn't just a book you read. This is a book you DO. There are plenty of checklist and blank spaces to fill in throughout the book which is why I would lean toward the print copy.

It is an encouraging layout. We aren't told to do A, B and C and your problems will be solved. Instead it's more like - let's talk about this problem you may or may not have. You have it? Well, you could try this or this or this. Hey, did you try any of the suggestions? How did it go? Which activities did you like? Why? Which didn't you like or try? Why?

This is book that loops back on itself, constantly referring you back to earlier chapters to help you understand what's being discussed in later chapters. They even do what I took to calling the Last Chance Call where the author would mention some earlier coping mechanisms and gently give you nudge. Hey, did you try them earlier? Would you be willing to give them a try now?

I think gentle is the perfect description for this book. She gently explains some problems and gives you some possible ways to change your habits. You get to choose what problems to address and how to address them. You're in charge. And as anyone who does overthinking knows, we like to be in control.
