True confessions, when I heard about the WOW Women on Writing Blog Tour for The Economy Always Gets Better, I flashed back to my high school economics class. Sadly, about the only thing I remember is that Mr. P. had a yardstick and roamed the aisles as he chatted -- and occasionally smacked the desk of a sleeping student. In general, it was a nerve-wracking class. Apologies to Mr. P. but I retained a lot more reading this book. And no worries that the crack of a yardstick hitting an old wooden desk would have me jumping out of my skin (I was a very timid 15 year old). With over two decades of teaching experience at institutions including Clayton State, Georgia State, and Gwinnett Technical College, Dr. Finlay has worked with students of all backgrounds and experience levels. Thoughts About The Economy Always Gets Better
Like so many people, I have a basic understanding of economics and finance. I know the "bad words": inflation, recession, high interest rates. But how we get to that point and who (if anyone) can improve the situation and how was beyond my pay grade. I appreciated The Economy Always Gets Better because it told me the things I should know but somehow straddled the line between knowing the reader(me) knew little to nothing about economics but not making me feel like a total idiot. It was a lot of "these are things you may have heard on newscasts or read" and then breaking those things down into understandable nuggets. I did have to read several chapters more than once (remember, finance is not my wheelhouse) but it helped that author Nikki M. Finlay left some bread crumbs. She would write something in Chapter 5 like, "...you may remember this from Chapter 2." Often I would only have a vague recollection but I would go back to Chapter 2, re-read, compare to the new info in Chapter 5. Ohhhh, I think I get it now. I also appreciated the charts, graphics and "assignments" to help you cement your new knowledge.
If you've ever wondered about the world of economics and finance but didn't want to ask (or didn't even know the questions) this could be the book for you. I learned new things, got a better understanding of other concepts and basically just feel a bit more relaxed about money after reading this book.
