No, I am not a Grandpa. But I am a Grandma (actually I'm a Nanny since my mom is the infinitely cooler Nan). But I thought, Hey, I can read this book and just use the ideas in my life as a Nanny. Thoughts about Grandpa Days
Although this book is titled Grandpa Days, it would be equally helpful for Grandmas, Aunts, Uncles or any adult hoping to play a significant role in a child's life. Author Perry Solomon does a nice job of balancing concepts like family dynamics, active listening and authenticity with practical suggestions on how to build a relationship backed up by plenty of personal experiences.
In addition to plenty of "here's an idea that worked for me", Solomon offers hope. Since he is grandparenting locally and long distance, he gives hope to the many grandparents who find themselves separated from their grandchildren's day-to-day life by distance or other circumstances. Hope for grandparents who had less than ideal grandparents, parents or weren't the best parents themselves that things can be different this time. And it isn't ground shaking changes he's advocating. It's small, simple steps that can help build a relationship. Solomon traces relationships with grandchildren who are each unique and points out that there isn't a one size fits all way of being an active grandparent.
As a member of the "Where are my glasses?" gang, let me tell you that the font used is both easy to read and a bit larger than your average book. A big plus for older readers.
Even if you act on just one suggestion after reading Grandpa Days it will be worth it.
