The Limerent series by L.S. Delorme is interesting as each book has a paranormal element but they also lean into another genre - romance, legal thriller, historical fiction. Today, I'm featuring a review of the last of the three stand alone titles that can be read in any order: Fanning Fireflies. I'm excited because this means that up next is Ghost Academy - the book where many of the characters from the first three books meet.
Check out my past reviews of Bright Midnights and Caio as well as Interview 1 and Interview 2. Lexy is too fascinating for just one interview! You can also do a last chance entry to win Caio or Sabbatical (her short story collection) HERE.
More about Fanning Fireflies
In 1944 Harrisville, Veronica’s dangerous love ignites a flame that reveals dark secrets, awakens ghosts and threatens to destroy all she loves.
It's 1944 and Veronica works so she can afford to eat. Maybe one day she will save enough to own the home her family is living in, but for now, she doesn't have time for fanciful thoughts, or much else.
She doesn't have time for the fire whispering to her, the ghosts trying to talk to her and the son of her boss, who can't stop staring at her. She definitely doesn't have time to think about Lazlo, the handsome black soldier that she processed at the draft office, but she can't seem to stop herself. As her ability to ignore Lazlo evaporates, so does her self-imposed ignorance about her hometown.
There is, and always has been, something rotten in Harrisville. It shouldn't have been a surprise. After all, Veronica works in the cigarette factory, where corpses hide in the tobacco with the roaches.
More about L.S. Delorme

Author Lexy Shaw Delorme (writing as LS Delorme) is the award-winning author of The Limerent Series, a genre-defying collection of emotionally resonant novels that blend supernatural mystery, psychological thriller, historical fiction, and romantic suspense. With a background as a lawyer, pop musician, and science writer, Lexy brings intellectual depth and
lyrical prose to every story she tells. Now based in Paris, she lives with her French husband and two very cool sons. Her work explores themes of limerence, memory, identity, and the echoes of past lives—and she’s not afraid to push boundaries along the way.
Thoughts about Fanning Fireflies
First off, historical fiction is my jam. And World War II? My fav. So Fanning Fireflies had two ticks in the plus column before I even read page one. But even if you aren't a super fan of either of those genres, I still want to recommend Fanning Fireflies because it is so much more than its genre. I became so immersed in the lives of Veronica, her family and friends that I almost read the entire book in one session.
Fanning Fireflies was my favorite Limerent series book so far. Author L.S. Delorme has a gift for portraying the emotional responses of the characters so realistically. I could physically feel their fear and desperation at certain parts of the story. And the ghostly apparitions (mostly animals)! They were both creepy and somehow sympathetic. How did those two feelings come together?
It's true that this is historical fiction, taking place in the Southern US during World War II, but the themes of this book reach beyond that time period. Because we still live in a world where in certain places, romantic relationships that don't match a certain accepted norm are frowned upon or even dangerous. In addition to being an exciting story, Fanning Fireflies will have thinking about how far we've come (and how we've stayed the same) long after you read the last page.
Note: There is some violence and domestic abuse in this book but it is mainly off the page. On page, we see the aftermath - the black eyes, the broken arm, etc.
